The scheme works best in rooms with a real window and some ceiling height, since deep plum needs daylight and a bright plane above to stay comfortable. It suits main bathrooms and guest bathrooms in older houses, farmhouse and barn conversions, cottages, and renovations where new drywall needs the character that panelling and paint can supply. It also works in compact powder rooms, where an enveloping dark colour is an asset rather than a risk.

Avoid it in windowless internal bathrooms unless artificial lighting is layered carefully, and in rooms with low ceilings finished in the same dark tone.
